A female member of staff winding armature coils in a press in a workshop at Charlton works.

Photographed by Topical Press, 1932

Location: Charlton Works, Greenwich, SE7 or SE10

Image no: A8537

Inventory no: 1998/50465

20th Century London caption: The woman in this picture is working a machine press at the Charlton works. This was the central repair workshop for London County Council Tramways, which ran it own fleet of trams. The tramways became part of the new London Transport soon after this photo was taken. The woman is using the machine to wind armature coils, which are the part of an electric motor that move the current. The photo was taken in 1932. Although it was more usual for men to be employed in manual positions, women were thought to be better at work with small components.
