20th Century London caption: Sheltered from the rain by the striped awnings, people in Brixton Market, Electric Avenue, choose vegetables and check prices. What was once an upmarket shopping street and the first in London to have electric lighting (hence the name), is now rich with the bustle and colour of one of the most culturally diverse areas in London. This street also lent its name to the international hit record, Electric Avenue, by Eddy Grant.
