20th Century London caption: This is Tufton Street, looking north from Dean Trench Street, after partial clearance. Charles White describes the 'hovels' on the left as 'typical of the “houses” of this street and its vicinity'. This poverty-stricken street was only minutes away from St James's Park Underground station. The war poet Siegfried Sassoon lived on this street shortly after the First World War (1914–18). His house was also demolished by developers.
