20th Century London caption: In this photo, several London Transport employees are taking a break in the canteen at Vauxhall in June 1951. The canteen had recently been remodelled to include re-designed cantilevered seating for customers. A cantilever beam gives extra support, so strengthening the seats to withstand heavy usage. At the time, many thousands of people were using staff canteens each day. In the background, two female staff are serving behind the counter. The woman handing something to a customer also appeared in a publicity film commissioned by London Transport that same year, but her name is not recorded.
