Decade - 1920s

Sample image from Decade - 1920s photoThe 1920s were years of modernisation and expansion. Trains were equipped with automatic sliding doors. New buses had enclosed top decks and pneumatic tyres, and serviced at the new Chiswick Works. Trams were re-equipped and modernised. The Underground was extended to the North and South, promoting the growth of new suburbs, while the Metropolitan Railway successfully marketed its own suburbs as Metro-Land. Busy stations like Piccadilly Circus were rebuilt with escalators and larger booking halls to cope with passenger numbers.
