Decade - 1960s
The early 1960s saw the rapid growth of the Routemaster fleet, replacing London's trolleybuses, and the opening of the Victoria tube line (1968-9)
The work involved new tunnelling techniques, a new automatic train operating system and the first automatic ticket gates along with a new modern look typified by bare metal and light grey tiling.
The last passenger steam trains ran in 1961, while on the roads the first one person operated buses were introduced towards the end of the decade.
