Sample image from Decade - 1950s photoWartime damage to the tram system's vulnerable infrastructure hastened its closure in 1952, whilst the lessons learned in aircraft manufacture were applied to the design of a new bus - the RM-type or Routemaster. Continuing staff shortages led to a programme of direct recruitment from the West Indies, starting in Barbados in 1956.
