- Joined Mather & Platt, a leading engineering company in Manchester (1885)
- In 1888 City & South London Railway (CSLR) decided to use electric traction rather than cable haulage to move its trains
- Mather & Platt won the CSLR contract. Hopkinson designed the electric locomotives and equipment
