Notable achievement: Electrified the first tube railway
  • Started his career at Siemens while working on the first electric tramway in Ireland (1883)
  • Joined Mather & Platt, a leading engineering company in Manchester (1885)
  • In 1888 City & South London Railway (CSLR) decided to use electric traction rather than cable haulage to move its trains
  • Mather & Platt won the CSLR contract. Hopkinson designed the electric locomotives and equipment
