Artist's impression of the sinking of the steam boat The Princess Alice, on the Thames, 3 September 1878

Terrible disaster, 1878 : Returning from an excursion, the Princess Alice was rammed near Woolwich by a large coal ship, the Bywell Castle. The boat sank within minutes and 640 passengers and crew were drowned. This horrific incident contributed to the decline of riverboat services.
