The Second World War ended in Europe in May 1945. The transport system had kept running throughout, but was now in a poor state. Stations, depots and garages were badly damaged by air raids. London Transport alone suffered 9000 incidents of damage to property and vehicles. The backlog of repair and renewal was huge.  Show objects
