Buses scoot past trams

By the 1920s trams were beginning to lose money. Bus services, which were cheaper to operate, improved dramatically. Although passenger numbers on the trams remained stable, the operating costs kept rising, driving prices up and profits down.

From 1923 onwards, the buses carried more passengers than the trams every year. By 1930 twice as many travelled by bus as by tram.
