Bus Electronic Scanning Indicator (BESI) running plate, 1957

Buses running on BESI routes carried these special plates on either side of the vehicle, above the driver's compartment. They were designed to reflect the light from the roadside beacons, and provided information about the position of the bus in simple bar code form.
